Task Bar Notification area

Hi folks,

I'm running Vista on my laptop and have set the Volume control, internet
connection, sidebar, there.

Seems like some days the only thing there is the volume control and when
I unlock the taskbar to fix it, the settings for the others are blacked out.

Sometimes they are not greyed out and I can check all of them.

Any ideas of how to get Vista to hold onto these settings?
