task bar icons

Again, the icons on the bottom right are not taskbar icons. This is
the system tray and they are thus system tray icons.
These are not shortcut icons to be created and deleted as elsewhere in
Windows, nor are they taskbar icons which show what program windows
you presently have open and are working with (and sit between the
start menu and the system tray).
The system tray icons are like flags telling you that a particular
program is running, usually in the background where you wouldn't see
it.
You cannot just delete them. You must either close the program for
each one, or, as was already stated, keep them from loading/running at
startup (prevent them from showing up in the first place) using
MSCONFIG or some other third party software to customize Window's
startup.

I am actually having problems removing task bar, not sys
tray, items. Somehow I got a number of folders on my
task bar. These folders are actually folders in My
Documents. If I right click and delete them they
disappear from My Documents. If I drag them to the
desktop they merely replicate. These things are annoying
and they take up valuable real estate. Help!!

It sounds like you may have added a My Documents toolbar to your taskbar.
Right click a blank area of your taskbar and select Toolbars. On the flyout
menu that appears, click to remove the check next to any toolbars you do
not want on the taskbar.
