Task Bar freezes

I have Windows XP Pro... when I try to connect to the net
for the first time after booting, the Task Bar freezes
for 2 or 3 minutes. It freezes as soon as I choose my
internet connection from the "Connect To" menu in the
Start menu. I can still use icons on the desktop - only
the task bar freezes....After the first time, all
subsequent connections are without problems! Help!

Cable, modem, ADSL?

Does the connection 'activity' occur immediately you select it, or does
it also 'freeze' for the period you mentioned before connecting?
