Hi,
from time to time, when i move the mouse over the clock field
in the task bar, the tip with date info is hidden behind, showing
only the upper edge of it. it doesn't happen with the other icons
on the task bar. why is that?

On the same issue, "Tips", how do I turn the tips off?

I simply don't need the tips, and I find they get in the way
frequently.

Thanks in advance,

It's unfortunately a well-known bug, for which there is no fix.

It's a well known issue for which there are no permanent fixes. Only
temporary ones until it occurs again.

You can disable the balloon tips with the following Windows XP registry change:
Click Start -> Run -> regedit
HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
Name: EnableBalloonTips
Type: REG_DWORD
Value: 0 <--- disables tips
Value: 1 <--- enables tips
If 'EnableBalloonTips' is not there, create (and rename) a new DWORD entry and assign the value.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Install TweakUI for XP. 'Taskbar and Start menu', 'Enable ballon tips' (uncheck to disable)
General Tab, uncheck the box next to "Enable tooltip animation", Apply.

Thank you VERY much!

Now, can you tell me where to find how to turn off the Start
Button balloon tip?

Thanks again.

It took me awhile to figure out what you are complaining
about.

This is not an issue for me, because I have a Quick Launch
bar that is two lines high. My program icons are on the top
bar, and my "windows that are open" icons are on the bottom
bar. Those two bars raise the height of the Task bar tray,
and when I put the cursor over the clock, the balloon tip
rises above the quick launch bar and is therefore, quite
easy to read.

To get a 2 line-high Quick launch, merely right click on it
and then drag it up to create 2 lines. It sometimes takes a
dozen or more "drags" to make the bar move up to 2 lines.

I asked awhile back how to do it with one attempt, but no
one answered.

That is ONE solution to your dilemma.

With a two line-high Quick Launch bar, your dilemma is
resolved.
Permanently.

Good luck!

I autohide the taskbar, and none of the posted fixes work.

I can get _almost_ tolerable behavior with this procedure:

(0) shut off keep-on-top, and leave it off in favor of step (1):
(1) double-tap the win or ^esc keys to get the taskbar on top
(2) edge the mouse to show it
(3) click the taskbar to make it stay up

After that it usually just takes three tries to get the tip windows to stay
up: the first two(ish) tooltips pop up on top and then dive behind the task
bar, but the third (or fourth, or first, depending on nothing I can tag) and
subsequent tips will behave docilely.

If I haven't activated a window that uses the taskbar's edge since the last
time I did this procedure, I can just edge the mouse and the tips still work
fine; so it's _almost_ like having an autohidden keep-on-top taskbar with
working tips for those crucial tidbits.
