Targetted link always opens new window

For some reason on my desktop (W2k Server, with IE 6 SP 1) whenever I clcik a
link which uses the target attribute. Or if javascript is being used to open
a window with a name, so it can be reused. My browser always opens a new
window. This is doubly annoying as effects day to day browsing, but as I
develop websites it make it hard to really tell whats happening. I have
plenty of other machine around which work, so I would like to get to the
bottom of why this particular machine has this problem. I have checked DLL
versions, and registry settings but couldn't spot anything obvious.

Thanks

Tony

I'm having similar problems. Although a window of a certain name exists IE
opens a new window when i link to that with the target name. It's anooying
and it's causing all sorts of errors. Have you found any resolution?

Thanks!

Hi Lisa

I have not had any luck in resolving this problem. I have been looking now
for over 7 months. I have found one other person suffering from the same
problem. Again on a single machine where they have near identical setups that
work fine. It has to be some combination of fixes and updates which causes
the problem. Whats really annoying is that having checked DLL versions, and
registry values I still cannot find any difference.

Thanks

Lots of users *want* that feature. Some get it by deleting the DDE Topic:
value in their File Types Open actions. Perhaps you need to find a
different Topic: value for those file types.

Does your OS have an IE Repair? (If not via Add/Remove Programs
then with setupwbv.dll):

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance

Alternatively, try the set of re-registrations listed in KB831429.
Those regsvr32 commands will re-initialize many file type values.
Since you are having trouble and since in a real IE Repair their
equivalent execution would be done during a reboot I suggest
you quiesce your system as much as possible before trying them.
(E.g., specifically make sure that iexplore.exe and msimn.exe
are not active processes.)

Good luck

Hi Robert

I have tried the regsvr32 fixes, but all the COM objects were registered
correctly before. The IE repair doesnt fix the problem either. Its something
very subtle with the setup on this machine. The problem is with links within
a HTML page, not necessarily a desktop link. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll
just have to keep digging around.
