target.lnk error after SP1/patches install

Karen

We have a small 4 pc peer-to-peer network in our office.
When I went to make sure a user's pc had the most current
patches installed, I discovered she didn't even have
SP1. So, I installed SP1 and all the recommended
critical patches. Now we are all using XP Home 2002
w/SP1. However, since her upgrade, when this user tries
to access documents in others' shared folders, she gets
the following error (error window is titled "Problem with
Shortcut):

"The drive or network connection that the shortcut
target.lnk refers to is unavailable. Make sure the disk
is properly inserted or the network resource is
available".

Now, this error only comes up when the user tries to open
a document (actually, a database) through the program
with which it's associated (Act). If I double-click a
document in Folders, it opens fine. And, when she opens
it thru the program, after you acknowledge the error, the
document opens fine. But why the error?

I found on the Knowledge Base where this problem has been
documented when two machines with different versions of
Windows share docs, here's the Microsoft "symptom":

"When you use a computer that is running Windows 95 or
Windows 98 to gain access to a documents folder on a
remote computer that is running Windows Millennium
Edition (Me), a Target.lnk shortcut may appear in the
folder. If you double-click Target, you may receive the
following error message: The driver or network connection
that the shortcut 'target.lnk' refers to is unavailable.
Make sure that the disk is properly inserted or the
network resource is available, and then try again."

But like I said, both of these machines are running XP
Home SP1, and it only happened after her updates
yesterday.

Any hints? TIA,

Karen

You could try deleting the shortcut to the network path beneath the My
Network Places folder.. and then let it recreate itself and see if the
problem continues.

But, I have suddenly been having this problem as well and the above
method is no longer resolving the problem.

I posted this in the following thread:

Yes.

I began to experience the same problem my XP Pro desktop machine. Luckily, I
also have a
laptop that I hadn't used for a few weeks that was minus 10 critical updates
and NOT exhibiting the behaviour. Both machines access the same network
shares on a Linux Samba box and both were already at SP1 level.

I imaged the Laptop's HD and set about installing the indicated critical
updates
one at a time, rebooting and checking for the issue. I installed each update
in
ascending order as per this list:

817606
819696
823559
823710
823980
815021
811493
819639
821557
822925 <---- after this one the problem occurred.

I then restored from the image and installed only 822925... the problem
did NOT occur.

Back to WU, this time installing from the top of the list
down, missing updates which I considered unlikely to be responsible (WMP,
JET etc).

822925 [already installed]
817606
823980
815021
821557 <--- after this one the problem occurred.

OK... restore from the image again, back to WU, install ONLY:

822925
821557

And sure enough, the symptoms you & I have experienced are there.

At the moment I've no idea as to the more precise cause of the fault, but
intend to compare registries before and after the installation of the two
patches to see if this lends a clue.

Regards,
