We have a small 4 pc peer-to-peer network in our office.
When I went to make sure a user's pc had the most current
patches installed, I discovered she didn't even have
SP1. So, I installed SP1 and all the recommended
critical patches. Now we are all using XP Home 2002
w/SP1. However, since her upgrade, when this user tries
to access documents in others' shared folders, she gets
the following error (error window is titled "Problem with
Shortcut):
"The drive or network connection that the shortcut
target.lnk refers to is unavailable. Make sure the disk
is properly inserted or the network resource is
available".
Now, this error only comes up when the user tries to open
a document (actually, a database) through the program
with which it's associated (Act). If I double-click a
document in Folders, it opens fine. And, when she opens
it thru the program, after you acknowledge the error, the
document opens fine. But why the error?
I found on the Knowledge Base where this problem has been
documented when two machines with different versions of
Windows share docs, here's the Microsoft "symptom":
"When you use a computer that is running Windows 95 or
Windows 98 to gain access to a documents folder on a
remote computer that is running Windows Millennium
Edition (Me), a Target.lnk shortcut may appear in the
folder. If you double-click Target, you may receive the
following error message: The driver or network connection
that the shortcut 'target.lnk' refers to is unavailable.
Make sure that the disk is properly inserted or the
network resource is available, and then try again."
But like I said, both of these machines are running XP
Home SP1, and it only happened after her updates
yesterday.
Any hints? TIA,
Karen
