Is there free software which allows me to convert my
songs on cassettes( tape-recorded) to mp3 format.

I am not that familiar with all the technical details. So
ideally the software should select the best possible
sampling rates and set all the parameters automatically
leaving me just to play the cassettes.

Any pointers are appreciated.

AFAIK, you'd have to record 1 side of the tape and then split it up into
songs using something like this:

Also, the poor quality of casettes -particularly old ones that tend to
lose the treble and go all mushy across all frequencies- makes it
worthwhile trying to source your collection from elsewhere if
possible....re-released CDs or vinyl. You'll be able to tell that that
particular MP3 came from a tape and it may well annoy you in comparison
with other higher-quality MP3s that you may possess.

for encoding your wav files into mp3 use Cdex or EAC (Exact Audio
Copy).
or indeed - CDEX can sample direct from the sound card these days if you
want it to.

AFAIK CDEX or EAC can encode only from HDD or CD. Line- in as source
is not supported.
So have to record firts to HDD then encode them.

Line in is also supported these days - "record from analog input" on the
tools menu.
