hey all..

what DDS4 tape drive would you recommend me? Sony or Seagate? what
model? auto-loaders worthwhile getting?

Depends on what you want to do with it. For backups DAT is not
really a good idea.

I will recommend sony because sony products are more reliable, last
longer and strong.

If I may ask why?

The problem is that the spinning head design causes a lot of wear on
tapes and drive. I know people that did a weekly backups and
had to get a new drive every year. YMMV, but at least some DAT
drives are not really professional equipment.

I can't talk for DDS4 but I had a SONY DDS2 SCSI tapedrive and most of
my backups (on lots of cardriges) are partially corrupt, inspite of
storing the tapes in a dry, clean, dark and well temperatured place.

DDS (DAT) tapes have a reputation for not being a good backup-solution,
due to their unreliability.

I would *never* ever go DDS again. Never. I recommend external
harddrives, redundant if possible, to anyone these days. But that's just
my 2c. Also there is more modern tape-technologies on the market,
