What is the best way to run tap?
On clean XP SP2, with no extra drivers installed? Or with all the extra
(display etc...that may not be in SP2) installed?
or On XPE ?

Andy,

What info do you need for TAP to provide?
I prefer not to use TAP (you can consult result that TA or TAP give you) at
all but instead I manually add what I need.
If you need only drivers then you can start with some macro template to make
you going and then add all necessary drivers and support components.

i find that if u run tap in the WinPE environment, certain software driven
devices wont be detected properly.. but it does give u the bare minimum
devices that your system support. overall i would go for running tap in
WinPE though due to the small pmq file. mayb u can start adding from there
on

TAP reads the contents of the Windows registry to identify hardware
components, so running TAP on an XP Pro Sp2 system would yield the best
results.

Because WinPE only contains a subset of the drivers included in XP Pro,
WinPE won't be able to provide as good a coverage as an XP Pro system,
however it will probably get you most of the drivers you need.

For best results, run TAP on an XP Pro system that matches the devices you
want to be running on your embedded device.

Dan,

The question is what you consider the best results. Personally, I do not want to generate "XP Pro" like image every time I import
PMQ results.

This is the reasons why I go and disable bunch of dependency in the imported SLD file if I use TAP output.
However, it appears that sometimes it is even easier to start with TA results (but just add some missing critical device drivers
manually) or, after all, start a new clean Configuration and add Kernel or Minlogon macro and add required devices manually from
database.

I've had mixed results using TA. I find that TAP generally finds all of the
devices I need, and if I need to do some pruning, I delete the devices I
don't need to support.

You can just as easily start with a clean config and add Minlogon+HAL+your
device drivers, but it depends on how well you know your device and how much
time you want to save. TAP is designed to help you build your device
quickly. If time isn't an issue, then adding all of the device drivers
manually will yield the exact results you want.

Thanks KM!
