taking off codes

I have been saving some documents I've worked on, now when I try to go back
and update them: they are in some kind of code which won't let me read them
much less update them.
I've tried changeing the language on the bar to the right and it's still
unreadable.

Most of this is for school, so any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Obasangel,
Make sure that whilst in the File - Open dialog, the list files of type is
set to Word
Doc (*.doc) and not Recover text from Any File.
Also what do you mean by changing the language on bar on the right. Which
bar is that?
