Hope some one can help with this.

I have been running IE6 for some time now and using outlook express
supplied with it on a dial up connection.

Up untill about a week ago everything was fine with it(apart from dial up
being painfully slow)

Now when I start either IE6 or outlook express the modem does it's thing and
dials my server and then connects, I can see the little flashing screens in
the bottom left corner(but they are not flashing.

I then have to wait about a minute or two before the screnn does anything,
either loads my page or starts checking my e-mail accounts.

Just on a hunch I opened up Windows task manager and watched the CPU usage
while it was logging on. At the start when it dials up everything is fine
about 3-8%. Once the connection is made the CPU usage goes to 100% for a
lenght of time and then drops back to normal and everything starts up as
usual.

I can't think of anything I have done to make such a difference.

I am running
windows XP home edition
256k ram
60 gig hd
a Conexant HSF V92 56K PCI modem driver version 6.1.9.0
It's a presario so I think it's their own make mother board.

Thanks

These parasites may be the culprit.

DssAgent
http://www.cexx.org/dssagent.htm
Problems: Reports of the DSSAGENT using large amounts of CPU also appear
fairly common

TinyBar
http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/TinyBar.html
Problems: The installation exploit itself may also cause IE to crash in some
versions. TinyBar/atk also eats a large amount of bandwidth, which may make
modem connections so slow as to be unusable
