I have an eee netbook running windows xp sp 3.
Some virus won't let me use IE or Firefox, it's trying to force me to
buy "XP Internet Security 2011."
I have been working on this all day and not getting much of anywhere.
Here's a link to my post on the craigslist computer forum. I've been
on bleepingcomputers.com too, going through an elaborate procedure
scanning and saving logs, but might not hear from them for a few days.
I have an out-of-date version of Malwarebytes. I was able to get it
to run with the computer in safe mode but it's 97 days old and I've
had no success trying to get it to update, so that hasn't helped.

How can I go about getting this cleaned up?

You successfully ran the 97-day-old MBAM in Safe Mode, and it did not
remove anything? The malware you named is at least 4 months old, so
MBAM should have it in its definitions even if that old.

What did MBAM find, and did you removes all the items it listed? There
will be a log file stored by MBAM of what was found and if you removed
it. Start MBAM, click the Logs tab, and open the log for the scan you
did in Safe Mode. "Save As" a copy of the log to a USB memory stick,
bring it to the computer you are posting from, open it, and paste the
contents of the log into a reply here.

You can't update MBAM from Safe Mode, but you can from Safe Mode With
Networking, if you have a standard broadband connection.

How long has the malware been on the system? Have you kept the system
disconnected from the Internet (cable unplugged!) since the infection
appeared?
