Takbar disabled

My taskbar has become disabled ever since I (auto) loaded one of those
microsoft automatic upgrade things that pop up.

It is only on my screen name.

What happens is that the taskbar shows as normal but when you run the mouse
over any of the icons nothing happens, likewise when you click (right or
left) over the icons nothing happens either.

Please,please help me, Im in the middle of my Masters degreee and this is
wasting valuable time

Please give further details. Even four or five consecutive words that
appear on the pop up might help.
