Okay, so far so good, but a right click on a link shows "Open in New Tab" as
greyed out. Does anyone know why??? I am unable to open a link as a tab, it
comes up as a new page.

In what program? If IE7:

You should post your question in the IE7 newsgroup *after* you spend
some time reading through the posts there. The IE7 newsgroup is:

microsoft.public.internetexplorer.general

There are a huge number of posts so it would be smart to start by going
to Google Groups Advanced Search. Use a search term that describes your
problem, constrain the search to the IE7 newsgroup and the date to very
recently. You can also check MVP Sandi Hardmeier's canonical IE7 site.
Sandi has workarounds, known issues, troubleshooting, and links. This
may be the only site you need.

And no, I'm sorry but I don't have your answer or I would tell you now. ;-)

If not IE7, please post back with what program or what you're doing.

Hello Bill,

Did you check that tabbed browsing is enabled? If not open tools, check menu
bar and open internet options. At the general page go to Tabs, settings and
check enable tabbed browsing.

Best regards

1. I choose a Vista group because I have just installed Vista. This browser
seems to be part of Vista.

2. There are some 43,000 posts here, "search" doesn't bring up anything for
"tabs".

3. Why would it be smart to go to Google Groups - I have never ever used
them and can't imagine what they are for.

4. If you are so clever then you would know immediately what I am asking for
so why be so obtuse?

Thanks for your thoughtful answer. Yes, I have that checked. In fact I think
that I have run through every permutation on that window. Plus "reset" the
whole thing and start from scratch. But whatever I do "open in new Tab"
doesn't want to play.

Thanks, however....

Bill

Will it open it in a new tab if you press CTRL and click on the link?

Yes, it does. Hmmm.... It looks like it is only my "Home Page" that has the
"open in new tab" right click option greyed out. Other pages seem to have no
problem.

Being nasty to me because you don't know what a browser is - good move.
Google Groups Advanced Search in the IE7 newsgroups using a sensible
search term such as "Open New Tab grayed out" brings up a ton of links
with answers. Here are the search results (TinyURL'd):

http://tinyurl.com/yqxqjx

Or you could have looked on MVP Sandi Hardmeier's site as I suggested.
She's got an entire section on troubleshooting tabbed browsing:

As far as me being "obtuse", you're the one who didn't describe your
problem well. I don't have a fscking crystal ball and no one here can
see your computer.

The information I just gave you should enable you to fix your problem. I
don't use IE7, so I can't help you or I would have given you the answer
immediately even though you are so unpleasant and rude.

Don't worry, I won't bother you with my "cleverness" again. I've plonked
you. Oh, and you can look up "plonk" on Google to get a definition.

No more than every computer running XP and IE7.

Best check your html writing program or
you have formatted your home correctly for tabs!
