tabs missing from taskbar

I have tried everything to make the tabs from minimized
windows appear in the taskbar. One day they were there as
usual, the next day they weren't. I have tried locking
and unlocking the taskbar, all possible settings that I
can think of, and even moving the taskbar sections
around. Nothing works. The only way I can get to
minimized windows is to cycle through them with alt-tab.
Help!
