Table of References.

Greetings.

I'm using Word 2002 (XP) to write a document which references man
external sources. I want to do so in the following way:

John Smith[1] says, ..... and Joe Bloggs[2] disagrees etc..

Then, at the end of my document I wat to put a Table of References suc
as:

[1] John Smith, Some Title, 1998.
[2] Joe Bloggs, Another title, 1999.
etc..

My problem is that my document is constantly being reshuffled, and
keep losing track of the reference order (I want to keep them i
numerical order). Also, Many references are used more than once, s
each time the order is altered, I need to parse the whole document an
change each reference.

I want to automate this, but haven't found a way to do it in Word. I'v
tried several approaches, but each fails. I started by trying to Ad
the Reference as "Captions". I defined a Caption which looks like thi
[<number> , and then just add the extra closing brace. I then insert
Table of Figures at the end of the Document, and it uses the Caption
to build up the List. Except that the Table of Captions also adds i
all the Text which is asscoiated with the Caption, e.g.

John Smith ....... [1]
Joe Bloggs ....... [2]

I can disbale the "......", but not the Text, so my Table always look
like a Figure of Tables!

Hope this makes sense - Anyone now I can do this?

Dave

There are two possible approaches to this depending on whether you want the
references in alphabetical order or in the order in which they appear in the
document:

1. For alphabetical order, create an ordinary numbered list (with numbers
formatted as shown) for the reference list. For the text references, use
Insert | Reference | Cross-reference to Numbered item: Paragraph number.

2. For chronological order, use endnotes. You'll need to add the brackets
manually. Where you want to repeat a number, use Insert | Reference |
Cross-reference to Endnote: Endnote number (formatted).
