table and row counter

Hi,

How do I insert a counter in the first column of a table? I want to
automatically number rows in a table as the table expands to any number of
rows. And actually I would like this counter to span several tables, i.e.
the count from the last row of the last table should continue in the first
row of the next table. How can that be done?

Hi Bo

Apply the built-in List Number style to the cells. As you add a row to the
table, Word automatically uses the styles in the preceding row, so the
counting will continue. And, unless you tell Word otherwise, the numbering
will continue from 1 to n through the document.

Hi Shauna,

That helps a great deal - is there any way I can precede this numbering with
a letter such that consecutive rows will be named e.g. A1, A2 a.s.o. I
haven't found a place where I can add text to a style, and a style is
obviously needed for this table trick..
