tabbed file manager for Windows

I have been a 2x explorer user for years, and been happy with it.

But now it is time to move on.

2 reasons:
1. No support for thumbnails in the pane. Why must everyone who
writes an explorer replacement use the list control? Why not just use
the browser control and get thumbnail support and more for free???
2. I want a tabbed interface. I've decided that is the optimal way
for me to view my files. 2 pane don't cut it no mo'.

I tried using crazy browser as a file manager. It almost works! But
I cannot figure out how to go up a directory (anyone know how?).

I tried tabbedexplorer.com. $25. Looks really nice. I love it's
ultra simple approach and uncluttered interface. I don't need a built
in FTP and file viewers and all that useless BS. But, a. it has a
mega annoying **10 minute** trial. and It has lousy support for
thumbnails. I like my thumbnails sometimes.

Any recommendations? Free or even cheap (OT be d@mned)?

If not, I am very very close to just not sleeping tonight and writing
my own using a tabbed dialog and browser controls. If I did this,
anyone want to pitch in? C# or C++? ;-)

There's probably a bunch of reasons. One is that the browser control
(I assume you mean the IE browser control) is buggy. It's a pain to
use, and hard to work around the various bugs in the variuos versions
of IE that are installed on all your "customer's" systems.

And you have to program to the lowest level of IE that is installed on
those systems. Not to mention that there are some people who don't
have, and don't want, IE installed on their system at all.

And then you have to add the things that the list control gives you
for free, that aren't there in the browser control. For example,
switching between large icons, small icons, list view, and detail
view. Sorting when you click on the column header. As far as I recall,
none of that is supported by the browser. In fact, I think you'd have
to have javascript enabled for column header sorting, so you've just
made the application fail for anybody who has javascript disabled in
all zones of their browser.

Oh yes, how about when you start to type a filename, the list control
automatically scrolls down to that filename.

Personally, I think it would be far easier to add tabs to something
like 2xexplorer than to implement a solid file manager using the
browser control.

But feel free to prove me wrong. :)
2. I want a tabbed interface. I've decided that is the optimal way

I agree that tabs would be nice, but only if each tab had 2 panes, I
would never go back to a single pane view. In fact, I think what I
would like would be multiple panes per tab, where I get to choose how
many panes are visible at any one time.

Just my $.02.

That's built into the browser control. Go to a local folder in crazy
browser and you can right click to view as large icons, thumbnails and
details.

Heh. I used to do web development. My philosophy regarding ppl who disable
javascript is: "p*ss on them." ;-)

If only 2xexplorer were open source...sigh. I poked around google for an
open source file manager but came up empty.

I could see some permutations, like 2 tabbed panes maybe.

Try MyIE2.
It supports tabs (that's what it is for, it's an IE wrapper) and it supports
thumbnails (since it's an IE wrapper, LOL).

Freeware, home site http://www.myie2.com/html_en/home.htm

And as goodies it gives you integrated pop-up control when you surf, automatic
filtering out of ads within the pages you display, great plug-ins and more. (Do
stay away from freaking Roboforms, tho. Yuuuuck!)

MyIE2 is the greatest thing since sliced bread, IMO. Those guys deserve
recognition.
