The T43 doesn't have a Firewire port. That implies you have
installed a Firewire card in the PCMCIA slot ?

And if that is the case, the Firewire card may not support
bus power. Perhaps your hard drive has an external power
brick, which delivers power to the hard drive ? Does
the DVD+RW have its own power source ? On a laptop, it
may not be easy to come up with a source of
Firewire power.
Firewire interfaces consist of six pins. There are
two data pairs (TPA+, TPA-, TPB+, TPB-). There are
also two power pins (VP and VG).
On Firewire devices that only have four pins on the connector,
there is no power available on those (the VP and VG
pins are missing). An example might be a Camcorder
Firewire interface, where there is no attempt to send
power from the computer, to the Camcorder. The Camcorder
runs from its battery, while the user downloads a movie
via the Firewire. The Camcorder has the four pin interface.
Some other devices may have relatively high
power demands. The PCMCIA/PC_Card slot may not
have the ability to provide power on the Firewire
interface. If the Firewire peripheral expects bus power
and doesn't get it, then it isn't going to light up.
Check to see if the Firewire device has an external
power adapter and retest with the external power
connected.
Also, read the manual for your Firewire devices,
and make sure you understand the order that the
wiring is to be connected and so on.
