I strongly suggest NOT using the misconfig as a start up manager. Misconfig
is actually intended as a tool for diagnosing startup problems. Which is why
you will get a stern warning to go back and enable everything you disabled by
unchecking boxes in the startup tab. I understand your frustration in not
finding the sometimes hard to locate preferences to stop a program from
loading at startup. However, there is usually a method withiin each program
to stop this action, it just may take a bit of investigation to find the
right configuration. If you need, contact the programs manufacturer and have
them tell you how to disable the program from running at startup. Sometimes
the Q&A pages will provide this information. Check there first. You can reove
the program shortcut from the Startup folder. Look in the startup folder for
your profile and the corresponding folder in the All Users Profile. However,
if the auto-start option is set in the registry this option won't work.
While msconfig is NOT a startup manager there are programs which are startup
managers which can be of assistance to anyone. For a meticulously organized,
searchable list that explains the source and purpose of many comman startup
programs visit Paul Collins' Start-Up Applications page at:
gttp://
www.sysinfo.org/startupinfo.php
There are several free or low cost startup managers on the web. Startup
Control Panel written by Mike Lin is available at:
http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml
Anothr is available with a paid subscription through the PCMag.com Utility
Library at:
http://www.pcman.com/utilities
There is also an automated tool to uncover all automatically starting
programs, AutoRuns, a freeware utility created by folks at Sysinternals and
is at:
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/source/misc.shtm#autoruns
Check these out if you like, contact the manufacturers website for
information, but please refrain from the tempation to use the msconfig as
anything other than a diagnostic tool, as it is intended. I know many use it
as a startup manager, but in my studies most professionals really discourage
this. Good luck!
