have attempted a review of GPO status and it is apparent that a number of
group policy objects have what i would consider to be VERY high version
numbers

presumably any GPO starts at 1 and then increments at each edit.

what other causes could there be for an incremented GPO version number

and another qu if i may - as i understand the GPO version is what is stored
in the directory and the sysvol version is that which is written to what i
think is the gpt.ini file in the sysvol file system directory.

what situations would cause these two to becomes out of sync and presumably
if they out of sync then this would be indicative of some error condition ??

Graham,

First, user updates and computer updates in the GPO don't increment at the
same value in the version. to verify this, look at a new GPO, it will have a
version of 0. Then, make a user change and look at the GPO version. Then,
make another new gpo and make a computer change. The new GPO version will
not be the same as the change to the user GPO.

SEcond, GPOs are made up of two components: GPT (Group Policy Template)
which is the files stored in the SYSVOL on all DCs. THe other component is
the GPC (Group Policy Container) which is stored in AD. These DO NOT
replicate at the same interval. So, you might have a small time frame that
they are out of synch.

Third, you can use the AD Replication Monitor (In the Support tools on the
Server CD). This will allow you to view the version of the GPOs.
