Today I ran Belarc Advisor and it indicated I had three Windows XP Security
patches needed to be reinstalled.

I did the reinstalls and Belarc says they are ok now.

But, now there is only the clock being displayed in the systray. I think
the missing programs are ok; they just don't display.

Any thoughts on how to get them to display in the systray again? That is
without reinstalling the programs if that will work.

Thanks folks,

While waiting for someone who knows more about this than I do, I'll ask this
question: Have you rebooted?

SWAG. Some Windows Updates set services that you had Disabled or set to
Manual back to Automatic. You have to check the darn things every time you
get updates.

Notification area icons are missing at startup.

Try disabling the SSDP Discovery Service and the Universal Plug and Play
Device Host service.

Do you have a double arrow (<< ) to left of clock pointing to the left ?
If so, your systray items are still there but may have been reset to a
different display mode. Right click the arrow, click on "customize
notifications...", then in resulting box, look to right for status of items
to left, If not shown as you want, click on an item; then on down-pointing
triangle to right to get three choices. Select what's wanted. Repeat for
others. OK, Apply, OK. Hope you have items back.
