Home page -- http://www.sysresccd.org/
You'll find various downloads via the home page.

SystemRescueCd is a bootable cdrom for repairing your system and your data
after a crash. You can usually use this to clone ntfs because the kernel
of the system supports ntfs along with ext2/ext3, reiserfs, xfs, jfs, vfat,
iso9660), and network ones (samba and nfs).

The main system tools are:
Partimage, a Ghost/Drive-image clone.
QtParted, a Partition Magic work alike.
GNU Parted, for editing your disk partitions.
File systems tools (e2fsprogs, reiserfsprogs, xfsprogs, jfsutils,
ntfsprogs, dosfstools) allow you to format, resize, and debug an existing
partition.
Sfdisk allows you to backup and restore your partition table.

IMHO, this is the best boot and repair disc available so far. It's worth
the download just to get "Partimage" and the other tools are good, too.
There is an adequate graphical interface. SystemRescueCd is Open Source.
Good luck, juzme

Which kind of Linux is it? Slackware, Debian, RedHat? JFTR

Hey guys - read this regarding rescue CD.

Warning about LG-Electronics CDRom drives:
Using this software may destroy several CDRom drives manufactured by
"LG-Electronics", with the following model name: "LG CRD-84xx". This
problem occurs with many Dell laptops.
The same problem happened with Mandrake 9.2 (more details)
These failures happened with SystemRescueCd-0.2.5, because the kernel
was patched with the packet writing support. SystemRescueCd version
0.2.6 and newer does not have this patch anymore. Then, it is safe to
use these new versions (0.2.6, 0.2.7, 0.2.8, ...). In other words,
don't use versions 0.2.5 and 0.2.6_pre.
Anyway, the best thing to do if you have an LG-Electronics CDRom drive
is updating the firmware.

Wonder why he wants us to download it?

From the Home Page:
"Build system: SystemRescueCd is based on the Gentoo LiveCd [which,
I believe, goes back to Deb], because Gentoo provides an easy way to
keep all packages up to date. It's built with the livecd-ng script...."
You may want to check out the forum availabe through the Home Page.
BTW, the knoppix live cd has lots of these tools on it, too.
Hope we're helpful,
juzme

Thanks for the caution but note that the current, stable version is, we're
told
(see the quote in your own post), safe in all these respects. He probably
wants you to download it so you can have the benefit of an extraordinarily
useful set of tools. Just download v 0.2.6+ and not one of the old
versions.

I agree. It is one of the best Rescue or utility Cd's out there.

It comes with QtParted -- a partition magic clone.
It also comes with ClamAV anti Virus. You can boot off the CD, download the
latest AV definitions and scan for viruses.

When you system is down due to a suspected virus infection, this CD cannot
be beat! How many of us do NOT update our main AV program as often as we
should.

Windows users should not be afraid of this program. Just boot it off your
CD-ROM. It works great and you do NOT have to install Linux.

Then you can do system repairs, scan for viruses etc.

To connect to internet to download the latest AV definitions (for
example) Is this (or can it be) done through a standard dialup account
(56k modem) or through ethernet or both?

I do not know whether this CD supports dial up. It definitely supports
Ethernet.
Take a peek at www.sysresccd.org and see if dial up is supported. (Or post
the question in one of the forums).
