Each time I switch on my system, It starts up displaying
the System32 folder - how can I stop it doing this?

I did. I got the message that the script could not repair my issue
since the expected registry value could not be found.

If Kelly's script didn't fix your problem, then you may have a startup item that isn't written correctly in the Registry. Click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT Go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Look in the right pane of each of these keys for a value that has spaces in the path or file name, and IS NOT enclosed in quotes. The command line will probably contain the Windows\System32 folder. If such an item is found, double click it and put quotes before and after it.

You may also want to double click each item, and verify that it does not have a leading space before it. This can cause the same behavior.

Last but not least, in the Current_User section, look for a value called SB Audigy 2 Startup Menu. If found, right click it and select Delete.

In addition to Doug, it's also been shown that certain trojans and some
spyware can cause this behavior. If you cannot find anything in the registry
yourself, please post the contents of the keys using the following steps:

To do this, start/run regedit, expand the branches to each key listed below
(do this one at a time).

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Click on the key, then on file/export. Give it any name, then save to the
desktop. Once you have saved both keys, close the registry editor.
Right-click one of the saved files on the desktop, choose edit, it should
open in notepad. Click edit/select all/edit/copy. Open a response to this
post and click in the message text area. Hit ctrl+v to paste the contents.
Repeat for the other saved key, then send the post for examination.

I did as Doug suggested... nothing looked out of line.

I also tried as you suggest but the copy/past failed
(file too large)... got a newsgroup message not to try it
again! Is there something I can do to reduce the file?
Do you need the hex data?

Thanks.
Scott.

Scott,

See www.dougknox.com, Win XP Utilities, Startup Programs Tracker. This utility will generate a log file that you should be able to copy and paste into a newsgroup post. Trim out the Running Services section, since its usually not necessary.
