System32 folder is missing!

H

HANNA

Hi everyone,

I am having a really big problem with my windows. Okay so here is what
happened I was having problems accessing websites telling me "error page
cannot be displayed etc.." so then I went here ..
"http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326155" and hoping it would resolve the
issue that I'm having. To my disappointmet it did not work... :(

So then I tried to talk to Comcast Customer Service about my issue and they
did some "ping" here and there, and when they told me to "ping" my system32,
cd, etc.. It wouldn't do it... A message will pop up saying .. "Not a valid
Win32 application". That's when they told me that System32 is required and
that I need to talk to Microsoft about it.

Yea... I think I accidentally deleted the System32 folder thinking that I
had a virus in it so decided to delete ALL files... I didn't know :(

So if anyone in here can help me I would GREAAATLY appreciate you for taking
your time and trying to help. PLEASE PLEASEEE !

What is your computer make and model? Is it a laptop or desktop? How old
is it?

What is your position regarding a Windows XP CD? Does the CD include
SP2?

Hope this helps.

Reading your post looks like *your pulling my leg* , but if you are legit
here are fixes...

#1 You can't Ping your System 32 folder
#2 I don't think you can delete it. it is a system folder and it is not
deletable in Windows.

First
*easiest fix*
Boot to the XP CD and select R (Recovery Console)
bootcfg/rebuild
a.. he first prompt asks Add installation to boot list? (Yes/No/All).

a.. Type Y in response to this question and press Enter.

a.. The next prompt asks you to Enter Load Identifier:.

a.. This is the name of the operating system. For example, type Windows XP
Professional or Windows XP Home Edition and press Enter.

a.. The final prompt asks you to Enter OS Load options:.

Type /Fastdetect here and press Enter.

a.. Take out the Windows XP CD, type exit and then press Enter to restart
your PC.

Assuming that a missing or corrupt boot.ini file was your only issue,
Windows XP should now start normally.

a.. Or

Boot to the XP CD and select R (Recovery Console)
run chkdsk /r from repair console booting from Windows CD

Or

Boot to the XP CD and select R (Recovery Console)

At the command prompt type:

ren c:\windows\system32\config\system system.old
copy c:\windows\repair\system c:\windows\system32\config
Reboot

Let us know how it worked

Thank You to everyone who tried to help me!!!

Okay.. so like what I've done is that I opened and check my "Folders Option"
in my control panel just to see if I have my "system32" hidden. GUESS
WHAT?!!!!! it was !!!!! hahahahah.. no wonder I couldn't see it. It wasn't
hidden before though so it's really weird. Maybe because of the Microsoft
updates? Who knows.

And to Clark ahhaaha.. YES YOU"RE RIGHT!! You can't delete Windows folders
its true. HEHEHE i thought I deleted it but I guess it didn't ... Wheeew!
Thank Goodness....

THANKS YOU GUYS AGAIN!!!!!!

BUt... I got another problem.

I can't seem to download my microsoft updates. I checked to see for the
updates how many MB it is... but it displays .. "0MB" Why is it zero????
Shouldn't there be 212MB for example? So, I'm not sure if that is the case on
why I can't seem to download the updates. Anyways, can anyone help me again??
:)

HI GERRY!

Its fixed now haha...actually what Clark said was that I can't delete
Windows folders since they won't let you so I tried to go see in my "FOlders
Options" in my control panel just to see if I have my system32 folder to
"hidden" and to my surprise when I finished unchecking the box I checked in
my Windows...and there it was! haha...

But I have another problem though... I can't seem to update my windows. On
the updates page it says "0MB".... shouldn't there be like a 214MB for
example?? That's why I don't know if that is the case. Please can you help?
THANK YOU :)

Hi Clark!

So I copied and pasted the code below into my Notepad and then saved it to
desktop, but when I double click it to run there's nothing happening to it.
Does it have to be ".bat" or ".txt" ?

Thanks for helping me again! :)

When saving from Notepad, click "Save As", change the "Save As Type" to
All Files. That will drop the .txt suffix. Save the filename with the
..bat extension. Wordpad doesn't force the .txt extension on you so I
usually tell people to paste it within Wordpad.

Hi Joe!

I tried copying the files to Wordpad but then there isn't a "All Files"
option only RTF , Txt, etc.. :(

How should I save these then to Notepad? Because When I put .bat and select
all files and double click it to open it just doesn't do it. So I'm not sure
what to do here. haha..

In Notepad, change to "All Files", then change the extension to .bat.
In Wordpad, just change the extension to .bat; the .txt extension should
be visible.

It's possible you'll need to repair the batch file association before
it'll work. Find the repair here:

Thank you SO MUCH JOE!

My windows update is now working. :)

I have another question, whenever I try to access lets say.. "www.ebay.com"
I get redirected to like yahoo.com and a list of ebay links..etc.. or
sometimes it will say "error page can't be found" and I checked this
"http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326155" but it seems not to work for me. :(

I already checked my firewalls and browser settings to see if it's blocking
it but no. Cleared my cookies as well. So now I don't know what to do, was
hoping if anyone or you could help me ??

Try an IE news group, but I believe you need to remove some add-ons, or
possibly remove some malware that redirects you. But it looks like a
Yahoo search takes over when a site isn't available; nothing malicious
there.. I seldom use IE so you'd do better in the proper NG where IE is
"spoken fluently".
