Hello all, I have searched and read several post about this problem.
But, I really haven't heard much about what is the cause. I have had
this happen 4 times and I just use Ghost to restore by backup so I can
get going again fast. Does anybody out there know what could be the
problem? Thanks, Mike

Try a boot into Safe Mode, by hitting F8 just before the "Starting
Windows" screen would appear (takes a bit of practice).
Choose LAST GOOD.

If that does nothing, use a working PC to read these sites...

How to Recover from a Corrupted Registry

describes a three-step process to extract a copy of the registry
from the System Restore SVI folder.

After your system is restored, the ERUNT utility available here may
make it easier to fix the problem if it recurs...

If the problem persists, try swapping current RAM (even if it checks
good) for a single, high-quality 512Mb chip. XP reportedly is sensitive
to memory timing.

Greetings --

When I experienced the problem, it was because my power supply fan
had failed completely and my CPU cooling fan had starting acting up
simultaneously. The resulting over-heating caused an abrupt shut-down
that corrupted my registry. Once I'd replaced the fans and restored
the registry, all was well. I was lucky that I didn't have any
permanent thermal damage to the CPU or RAM module.

Another possible cause could certainly be defective or border-line
RAM causing the same sort of corruption to the registry.
