Hello. I am hoping that someone will be able to offer some advice on my
problem.

First, the specs of my system:
2.8 P4
Asus P4S533 mobo
1256 MB of 2700 ram
ATI Radeon 9000 video card
Sony DVD burner
Sony CD-rom
WD Caviar 75GB HD
FDD
integrated sound
Zoom 56 modem

Now the problem. I was using my computer the other night, it was working
just fine and I shut it down. Later, I turned it on and it did nothing.
The monitor was blank, (the green led blinks at me), no beeps, no POST,
nothing. I rebooted. Still nothing. Cracked it open and had a look.
Light on mobo is on, fan is running on cpu, lights from the cd-roms come on.
I don't hear any hard drive activity. The lights on the front of the
computer are both on (red and green). The red one never use to be on all
the time either. But now it is. Once, and only once, I did get it to come
to life. It went right into the BIOS setup and had a message about the cpu
being mismatched. But it was set correctly. I hit F10, it asked me if I
wanted to save, I said yes and it died again. That was the last breath she
took.
Any suggestions as to what the trouble might be? I took out the video card
and the memory and it still did nothing. I put the memory in, one at a time
and still nothing. I reseated the CPU and still nothing. I am very open to
thoughts and suggestions because I need this old girl to come back to life!

It sounds like either a bad power supply or a bad CPU. Most likely suspect
is a power supply, so replace that and see what happens. -Dave

Dave,
You will be my new best friend if it is only the power supply! That is a
whole lot easier to replace than the other stuff!
I'll let you know.

reset CMOS using the jumper then if that doesn't wok

Remove the HDD and CD from the power and try again

If the machine works without the HDD and CD but not when they are added, it
points to the Power Supply.

The power supply unit will be here tomorrow. The tale would be told then!
Thanks for replies.

Be certain you cycle the power switch on the back (or unplug it) for a few
seconds. Some power supplies will lock up ("crowbar") with 0 volts out
after they have been overloaded. You have to remove power to reset them.

Well, the new power supply came, I installed it and still nothing. Reset
the cmos and still nothing. So I suppose I am looking at a new mobo?
When I power it on, all the fans come one (cpu, case fans, power supply).
The LED's for the cd-rom come on and the ones for the case (power up and
reboot). The reboot and the cd rom stay on all the time. Suggestions as to
who believes this is mobo?

Thanks
Sally

Have you tries the mobo on a non-static material on a table with the PSU
attached, one stick of RAM in place and the power switch attached and a
video card attached.

Then reset the CMOS, make sure the jumper is in correct position and turn
on.

If it doesn't work it is likely the mobo. If it does work then add in a
floppy drive and run some memory diagnostics.

If that works turn off power and try 2nd memory stick (if needed) otherwise
have a good look at the case and see if any of those little metal posts the
mobo attaches to is not lining up with a hole on the mobo.

I would then continue to connect HDD and CDs out of the case to see where
the system fails.
