I am having a problem with my parents computer. The ssytem will no
longer boot. A basic run down is the following: Win XP installed,
ssytem was left running and it went into "slumber" mode for the past
couple of days. I went in this morning to work on my taxes, and it
won't return to a normal state. After shutting down and restarting,
nothing happens past the test for the drives. The LED's ont eh
keyboard don't flash either. I tried replacing the video card, but
this changed nothing. Also moved the memory stick from one slot to the
next. again nothing. I am nearly at my wits end with this thing, as it
keeps running into problems somewhere. Sick part is, it's a fairly new
system. Hasn't even been running for over a year yet. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Boot into the BIOS...and see if everything looks okay.

Then boot into a system floppy and see if you can see the drives. If
yer runnin' NTFS, you'll need special software to be able to do this.

Good luck.

I neglected to mention, i am unable to get any type of display when
this is happening. I have since swapped out the hard drive, memory
stick, and CPU, in addition to the video card previously. Best i can
figure at this point, is that the AGP bus has gone bad. The system
makes all the sounds as if it is booting, but never gets past some
point in the POST. Problem here is, i never get a beep out of the
system to indicate that is has a problem during POST. Any further
suggestions are apperciated.

Thanks

Then how do you know you have a problem in POSTing?

Get a PCI video card and try that. Also, try that monitor on another
computer...and another monitor on THAT computer.

Maybe it DOESN'T. Maybe its booted to the desktop.

Ok, one more update to this and lets see what this gets us. I have
tried the monitor on a different computer, works fine. Also tried the
PCI bus video card, still nothing. Finally, i tried simply booting the
system with no drives connected. I am sure we can agree that i should
at least get something still. Nothing though. It would seem it's not
even starting the POST to begin with. This would suggest a total BIOS
failure. Not a pretty picture. Finally, tried disconnecting all other
cards from the PCI bus. and still nothing. Even a bad CPU on this
system would still allow it to POST. I am figuring i need a new mother
board still. Unless you have another suggestion Trent, this will be my
next move.

Thank for all the help.

Switch the power leads at the wall or power strip between the monitor
and computer.

But I thought you said it was searching for the drives...or something
like that.

You ARE getting power to the board...correct? And to the monitor.

Try shorting the jumper to reset the board. That's about all I can
think of.
Thank for all the help.

Welcome, Chris...good luck.

I have a Compaq Presario which had the same problem a month after I got
it. Sent it in under warranty and had to have the processor and
motherboard replaced.
