Its possible your PC's Power Management capabilities are incompatible with
Vista and needs a BIOS update. Have you checked the manufacturer of your PC
for any recent upgrades.

Adam:
There is a possibility that one of the installed programs is causing
the stand-by issue since it worked initially. AV programs can be a
contributing factor.

I think there is some hardware that can do it too - do you have an
intellimouse or wireless mouse?

Go into Performance Information and Tools > Advanced Tools and look near the
top. You may have some info about performance issues, such as what is
causing your system not to go into sleep.

Also check Event Viewer, under custom views there is Administrative Events,
and there should be some entries under there about your failure to go to
sleep. If it's not obvious what it is, post what you find...

I just installed Vista Ultimate. For the first day standby and screensavers
came on as per the power settings.
However, now the screen saver will not turn on and the system will not enter
standby automatically. If I press the button to enter standby it works fine,
but it will not enter standby after the specified amount of time.

I have only installed the following programs:
Windows Live Messenger Beta 8.1
OneCare Live beta 1.5
Firefox 2.0

Otherwise nothing else has changed from when standby was working and now
that it is not. Any suggestions?

I have a GIGABYTE GA-965G-DS3 with the latest BIOS installed. The board is
labeled "Vista Ready" so i t shouldn't be a problem with the motherboard.
The strange thing is that it worked initially.

With a Microsoft Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse 4000, Vista will not go
into standby. The base has to be unplugged from the USB port, and only then
will Vista go into standby.
