i seem to have a small partition on drive D named system volume , i think it
contained preinstall files that ran automatic updates when i bought my
computer which was originally configured with windows me - I've had xp for
ages now- it doesnt show up in win explorer - any ideas on how to get rid of
it , it seems the ideal place for viruses or trojans to lurk.

Hello
ya you can stick a windows me startup disk in your floppy
and boot up into fdisk and see what your partitions are.

if you don't have a boot disk go to <bootdisk.com> and
make one.
then bootup to it, then type 3 for start puter without cd-
rom and at the a:/ type fdisk hit enter if it ask you if
you want to enable large disk space type Y and enter(that
might be before you type fdisk can't remember) then you
will see a list of 4 options 5 if you have 2 harddrives,
anyway type 4 (to check partitions) and you will be able
to see if you have more then 1 partition and the size
then you can hit ESC and go back then you type 3 to
delete partition then you choose the partition you want
to delete.
NOTE: make sure there is nothing on it that you might
need or you will make a big mistake.
Hope this helps
Jim

Is the folder System Volume Information?
If so, it is the folder that contains your restore points. If you want to
remove a virii from it.....Simply turn restore off, reboot the comp, turn
restore back on and create a manual restore point. Turning it off removes
all restore points.
