I make regular weekly backups of my system with Symantec's ghost ... And
always back up before any major change to my system. All my data is save on
my "D" drive. How necessary is it to have system volume restore operative?
Does it eat up a lot of disc space? How does one go about deactivating it?
Thanks for any help here.

If you're religious about making backups, then its not that critical. You
can adjust the amout of disk space used by going to Control Panel, System,
System Restore. You can also turn it on/off there.

I make up regular backup sets too but leave System Restore enabled for the
Windows drive. It's handy for fixing those little oopses that have just
happened. If results are not desirable or the problem is more complex than
a small blunder that can be easily undone, I get out my backup set.

The amount of disk space used, depends on your settings. Default is 10-12%
of the drive. Minimum setting is 200 MB. Most systems can fit quite a few
restore points in that minimum amount. I'm set for 500MB and usually have
around 10 restore points to choose from.
