My hard drive is partitioned into 4 drives. Each one has a file on it
called "System Volume Information". There must be something wrong
with one or several of these files, as I occasionally get an error
message from some program trying to scan the drives that the file is
corrupt.

What should this file be for? Can I safely erase it?

Hi

What error message(s) do you get? Those folders hold the files for System Restore. If those folders do hold corrupt files you can turn off SR for the appropriate drive(s), reboot, re-enable SR, then reboot again. That will delete all of those files, but will, at the same time delete any Restore points that have been created.
