My W2000 PC often blocks my access for over 1 hour and
Task Mgr indicates "System" occupies CPU 99% during this
time. Norton can't detect any virus.
Is this normal?

I'm no expert but it is definately not normal, I have been running w2k
on a 266-cpu with 196MB memory for several years and not had any such
problem. You might want to try to get more information about what
exactly is going on with "System". Try using taskinfo, you can use it
for 30 days without registration. You can get taskinfo at
http://www.iarsn.com/download.html it combines several different things
including the taskmanager functionality.

Certainly not normal. Try selecting F8 before Windows starts up and use safe mode for
a while to see if it happens. If safe mode works then you have an issue with a
startup program or a device driver. Invoking Task Manger via control-alt-delete may
help show what process/application is causing the problem. If you see a process,
other than idle or SETI, using most of resources then right click it and select end
tree process. If that helps and does not crash computer than you can try to uninstall
application that creates that process. If you have a W98 or XP computer, copying
msconfig.exe to the \winnt\system32 folder and using it can help determine what start
up application is causing the problem by selectively disabling startup programs. It
may also be worthwhile to run SpyBot Search and Destroy on your system. --- Steve
