System Upgrades - Installation Sequence

I am in the process of upgrading (motherboard, processor and hard drive) my son's Win98-based PC. To match the new motherboard's built-in capabilities (LAN, USB, sound), it is apparent I will need to also upgrade the operating system (from Win98 [First Edition] to Win XP). To minimize upgrade woes, IN WHAT ORDER (I.E., SEQUENCE) SHOULD I COMPLETE THE UGRADES? It will prove to be virtually impossible to upgrade the operating system (Win98 to Win XP) with the current hard drive (8GB partitioned (dating from the old Win95 days) into four (4) 2GB drives) -- there is insufficient space on this old hard drive to meet Win XP's 1.5 GB requirement. It would seem to me, the logical upgrade sequence should be: (a) upgrade the hard drive and copy the current Win98 operating system onto the new hard drive. (b) upgrade operating system. (To save money, I would like to use Windows XP Home Edition Upgrade. WILL IT BE NECESSARY TO COPY AND/OR REINSTALL WIN98 BEFORE INSTALLING THE WINDOWS XP "UPGRADE?") (c) upgrade the motherboard and processor. IS THIS THE CORRECT SEQUENCE? ANY POTENTIAL PROBLEMS I SHOULD BE AWARE OF? ANY OTHER COMMENTS AND/OR SUGGESTIONS? Thank you.

Install all your hardware upgrades, then perform a "clean install"
which does not involve installing Windows 98 first. All you need
is an "upgrade version" of Windows XP and your old Windows 98
CD (setup will prompt you to insert it at the appropriate time).

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

NOTE: It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except the monitor, mouse and keyboard, before installing XP.

1. Open your BIOS and set your "CD Drive as the first bootable device".

2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

5. Clean Install Windows XP

6. ** Immediately after installing Windows XP, turn on XP's Firewall **

7. After Windows XP is installed, visit the Windows Update website
and download the available "Critical Updates".

8. After installing the critical updates, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

9. If you happen to run into any installation difficulties, use the following resources:
