How can I change settings in certain applications so that
their icons do not automatically show up in the system
tray on start-up?

Hello Geza,

If you just want to hide the icons, R-click the taskbar and choose
properties, click the customize button and change whatever you want, to
either always hide, hide when inactive, or always show. You will have to
click whatever is to the right of the icon you want to change to get the
dropdown menu.

Now that does depend on the application. Usually
you can find a check box somewhere in their "tools"
--- "options" concerning "visible in toolbar",,,,,,
but, you can also 'right-click' -- delete -- most of the time ---
they are just shortcuts anyways.

You are speaking of the Notification Area.

Check for an option to not having the icon load in the System Tray via the
program(s) in question.

Other options for removal of the icon(s):

Go to Start/Run and type in: msconfig. Go to the Startup Tab and uncheck
accordingly. Then run this script to remove the disabled items from the
registry.

Or...remove the runkeys from here: Start/Run/Regedit
