I wonder why in Vista, the Sound Icon in the System tray has a large gap next
to it. It doesn't look right when positioned next to other icons. XP wasn't
like that.

It's because it's static i.e it won't disappear if inactive icons are
hidden. Right-click on the task bar and choose Properties and then go to
Notification Area. Here you can change its status if you wish and then it
will disappear.

i dont wish it to disappear, i was just wondering why it has a gap between it
and the next icon becuase other windows versions didn't have the gap.If you
dont know what i mean, look down to your sound icon and you will notice a
gap(big enough to fit your mouse in it if you hover over it) between it and
the icon next to it also on the tray. Its strange. I'm not asking for a fix,
just wondering why its like that.

As I tried to say, the gap is a visual indication of the fact that the icon
is static. I don't think there are any other options other than it being
static (and with the gap) or being hidden. Don't ask me why and I agree
that it looks strange. My network icon suffers a similar fate so I have two
icons to the right with the gap and the rest the left without the gap. I
don't think this can be changed.

Actually it has nothing to do with it being static or non-static.

It has to do with system vs. non-system tray icons.

Sound, Network, and a couple others are in that area with the "gap" on the
right side to show that they are system icons.

Sidebar and other tray resident applications that are "optional" aren't
included so they are grouped together on the left.

on my machine I've noticed that the "gap" is there to provide room for
the "mute" slash/circle when it's muted and when it's not muted there
is a tiny "sound wave" that gets larger as you turn the volume up. So
to me it's an "active" icon, not a static one.

Correct. My bad.
