Looking for a small freeware app to restore system tray after Windows
Explorer "crash". Specifically not a background-running application.

thanks

A nice thing about tray manager is that it allows you to create a sub
menu of under used tray icons as well as restoring after a crash. I
dunno about 'not background running'... if it is not running how does
it know Explorer has crashed?

This is the first working dowmload link I found that doesn't link to
PC Mag:

I've actually used Tray Manager before and quite liked it. But I ran
across YTrayMagic at
http://www.cascadelines.com/Pages/WindowsandBrowsersTips/Tip50.html
and at 225KB, rather liked the idea of having this for the express
purpose of just restoring tray icons. I presumed this ability might
exist without the need for a backgrounded process. YTrayMagic sits in
the tray, but can be activated by hot key too. I was hoping for a simple
runnable .exe to do this task. Maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree?

I've used YTrayMagic before also, but prefer Tray Manager because of
its, er, tray management functionality.

Dunno; I'm not technically savvie enough to know... it seems to me to
be asking a lot of a prog to know what was in a crashed sys tray
before it was launched. Doesn't YTrayMagic need to launch before other
tray apps in order to know what they are?

Yes, it does. Maybe this is a necessity. I do know that it takes less
than 5 lines of code for an application to monitor for the system tray
(re)creation message and re-add its own icon. I've programmed it many
times myself and I guess that's why it irks me so much when apps don't
re-add their own tray icons. :) You may well be right with your
assumption though... in fact, the more I think about it, the more I
think you must be correct. Oh well, Tray Manager here we go... it could
do with a tidy up anyway. ;-)

cheers
