The bar at the bottom of my screen that has the Start, clock, etc., goes away
without warning after using either normal applications or using the internet,
[during use], this forces me to shut down computer by powering down. After
rebooting, I have normal desk top again and this repeats an hour [or so]
later. Does any one know why this happens and is there a fix???

It's called the Taskbar.

[[A special toolbar that docks on an edge of the desktop supplied by the
system. The taskbar includes the Start button, a button for each open
primary window, and a status area.]]

Have a look at these settings.

Right click the Taskbar | Properties | Taskbar tab |
Under Taskbar appearance

Auto-hide the taskbar
and
Keep the taskbar on top of other windows

Auto-hide the taskbar
[[Hides the taskbar. To redisplay the taskbar, point to the area of your
screen where the taskbar is located. If you want to be sure that your
taskbar will be visible whenever you point to it, select the Keep the
taskbar on top of other windows check box and also select the Auto-hide the
taskbar check box.]]

Keep the taskbar on top of other windows
[[Ensures that the taskbar is always visible, even when you run a program in
a maximized (full-screen) window.]]

Hope this helps. Let us know.

The facts are, Wesley, XP's Taskbar has always had a habit of losing
it's settings, and the Taskbar and Notification Area (or the icons in
it) also have a habit of disappearing altogether. The Baron is not
the only one who has had a problem with the Taskbar. Many, many
others also have the problem from time to time, as is evident from the
many posts about this in these newsgroups.

But the Baron failed to let us know whether he has a third-party
utility running or not (such as WindowBlinds, or other Stardock
products, which tend to cause the Taskbar to disappear from time to
time), so it might not be caused by the Taskbar's built-in bugginess
after all.

This is also might be caused by XP shutting down before Desktop
settings can be saved, or by Desktop settings never being saved in the
first place.

In any case, the Microsoft engineers need to take another look at the
Taskbar, and really reengineer it, since it is the most useful part of
the XP Desktop. And third-parties need to take a look at their
applications which affect the Taskbar, and get them to work seamlessly
with the Taskbar, as they should.
