System Tray Icon

I have the beta version of the Antispyware program,
version 1.0.615. It is set to start when I start the
computer. However, the spyware icon does not always
appear in the system tray. I do not have the hide option
selected. Some time ago someone told me to add/remove the
program and then reinstall. They also said to be sure the
registry did not have spyware listed. My question is this
since I am not an expert in the registry.

As I do an add/remove and then do a reboot. Then do a
regedit and search for the term spyware in each of the
regkey sections and get a hit, can I simple delete this
entry without causing a problem.

I intend to do a restore before I do the add/remove and
then after the add/remove BUT before the regedit
operation. Will this enable me to get back to a solid
registry IF things go wrong.

Thanks for any help.

OK, did that. I'll watch and see how it works now. Funny
thing is that sometimes the icon will be there and other
times it will not. I think, but I'm not sure, that it is
a time problem as there are 7 icons in my system tray and
they seem to change sequece.

Thanks for the help Tom>-----Original Message-----

Doing as you suggested put the icon in the system tray
right after the reinstall. However on the next (and
subsequent reboots) it was not there. Any other
suggestions? Thanks

This is not a problem with MSAS, it is a long-standing bug in XP.

The only known work-around is to use Start -> Log Off, and then Log On
again, when all the missing icons will re-appear.

Unfortunately, the icons will likely go missing again the next time XP
restarts, so you have to repeat the LogOff/LogOn again.

I guess my basic concern is not the missing icon BUT is
the program setting in memory as a TSR. Is it functioning
to detect and prevent spyware IF the icon is not in the
tray. If I check the task manager nothing appears in the
application tab and I don't know the name I should look
for under the processes folder. Can you help me with the
name or answer the TSR question.

Yes it is.

Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete and you will see that
gcasDtServ.exe and gcasServ.exe are both running. These
two processes are the processes for Real-time
Protection. The reason they start with gc is that the
original producer was Giant Company, hence the gc in the
process name. Since the application was put into beta
only 21 days after Microsoft bought out Ginat Company,
many, MANY references can still be found to Giant
Company. If you look at the c:\program files\microsoft
antispyware folder, you will see almost every itme starts
with gc, and two start with GIANT.

The references to Giant Company will likely go away once
the new beta, Beta2 is released, likely sometime by the
end of the year.
