I'm trying to install Windows XP Pro on my girlfriends
computer after formatting the hard drive. I insert the
XP disk, it loads the necessary drivers, but as it
says "windows is starting up" the dvd drive stops
spinning and I get a message that says

System\System32\ntdll.dll error.

I've installed this XP on the computer before(new hd),
and never had this problem. My gf's been with out her
computer for about 2 weeks now, because I can't find
anything or anyone who can really help. Was hoping that
anyone could tell me whats going on, or at least what the
error means. Thanks.

Use the following procedure to install Windows XP:

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

NOTE: It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except the monitor, mouse and keyboard, before installing XP.

NOTE: If you have an internal Zip Drive installed, physically disconnect the
EIDE and power cable to it before proceeding, otherwise your main
hard drive may not be assigned the customary C: drive letter.
After installing Windows XP, you may then reconnect it.

1. Open your BIOS and set your "CD Drive as the first bootable device".

2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete all the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

5. Clean Install Windows XP

6. ==> Immediately after installing Windows XP, turn on XP's Firewall.

7. After Windows XP is installed, visit the Windows Update website
and download the available "Critical Updates".

8. After installing the critical updates, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

Try removing the RAM or taking it out and puting it in again. If you have 2 RAM cards try with just one of them or take a RAM from another computer. It might work. I have a friend that had a system32 error when installing (i don't know if the exact one) and after he removed one of the RAM's it worked like a charm.

You can also try to remove all the cards that aren't needed (sound card, Lan, video, modem etc.) so you have just the mouse and keyboard and the monitor (and video if you don't also have on board video) and try installing it then. It might get rid of any conflicts and work. You can add them after your install.

Good luck.
