On my old computer there was a system summary which took about 3-4 pages to
print. On my new one I got 125 pages. The old one ran W98SE; the new one
runs WXP.

Is there a simple summary of the several components of the system that I'm
just not finding? Like a few details on the hardware and software, but not
this huge log!

Thanks...

Click on Start | Run and enter msinfo32

You can selectively print any of the items shown.

I got to the same place by another route, but when I tried to print out one
page I got a report that was 125 pages long. Is there some other place to
go for this information?

Phil

In msinfo32 highlight the item or category that you want then right
click on it and save it to a text file. You can then print the text
file or use a text editor (Notepad) to further edit the contents of the
file before you print it.

OK, got it. Thanks.

But that's WAY more detail than I need! Isn't there a simpler summary of
everything I've got on my computer? I believe that, under Windows 98SE,
there was a diagnostics program that gave a good summary as one of the first
options. Is there anything like that under XP?

John John...

Tried that. Under "Control Panel" I don't have the "Performance and
Maintenance" option. So I'm still looking...

Are you saying that you cannot get to the Device Manager?

All kinds of different ways to open it, try one of the following methods:

1- Click Start, click Run, and then type devmgmt.msc.

2- Right-click My Computer, click Manage, and then click Device Manager.

3- Right-click My Computer, click Properties, click the Hardware tab,
and then click Device Manager.

4- Type the following command at a command prompt:

start devmgmt.msc
