What is the purpose of a SBU. If you have a crash, which prevents you
even booting into Safe Mode, then the backup cannot be restored, as it
is of file type bkf, and needs Win2k to restore it. Recovery console
won't restore it either. Therefore in many cases it's useless....unless
I'm missing something.

That is true, however the advantage of it is you can perfom a clean
install, then restore the backup and get your system state back to what it
was. This is particularly usefull on servers, to get active directory and
things running quickly, as opposed to recreating all the information.
