I have XP home edition. During startup the error
message "windows could not start because the following
file could not be found or is corrupt: <windows
root>\system32\ntskrnl.exe." How do I go about fixing this

Sounds like you could have some file corruption. Probably the easiest thing
to do is boot from your Windows XP CD-Rom and choose the option to do a
Repair install. The first screen should ask whether you want to do an
Install or use the Recovery Console. Choose Install. Then next screen should
search the drives and find your previous install of Windows and ask if you
want to repair it.
