I can't get my Windows 2000 Professional to standby. I use a laptop too and
so the standby feature is an imperative. I keep getting the message:

The device driver for the 'SCSI/RAID Host Controller' is preventing the
machine from entering standby. Please close all applications and try again.
If the problem persisits, you may need to update this driver.

I've closed all applications and tried to enter standby again, and I've
updated the driver and it still won't enter standby. Please Help Somebody!

Michael,

I'm having the same problem with Windows-XP on a desktop. Mine is related
to a scanner I have which uses SCSI protocol through the parallel printer
port. Since I'm not willing to throw away my scanner yet, I can't remove the
SCSI/RAID Host Controller device driver. I have had no luck in finding a
more updated driver and finally submitted a service request to microsoft.

For your problem, as far as I'm aware SCSI is related to hardware built with
SCSI interfaces. SCSI is fairly old, so I can't imagine a laptop with SCSI
hardware in it or attached to it. If your somewhat certain that you don't
have a SCSI device then you might be safe in just removing or uninstalling
the driver out of your device manager.

Hi RD,
My laptop's fairly old (it's a Dell Latitude CP- the sticker on the front
says that it was designed for Windows NT and 95)... and I have a scanner
connected which uses the SCSI protocol through the parallel printer port too.
I have not tried to get in touch with Micrsoft though, I think Windows 2000
has entered it's extended support phase which means I have to pay for tech
support (I think... that's what a friend told me.) I don't really want to
remove it from the Device Manager. I was wondering whether I'd be able to
disable it, then I could re-enable it when I need to use the scanner (or is
that what you meant when you said removing it from the device manager?).

Thanks for replying to my post by the way, I was starting to think that
everyone out there wasn't willing to help. Your assistance is greatly
appreciated! Please reply if you can.

My scanner is a ScanPort SQ300. The company also sells under ScanPaq and
MicroTek names. The SCSI/RAID Host Controller driver is "smplscsi.sys".
This was made by a company called OnSpec Electronics for Scanport. Microsoft
includes this driver with XP and so the device manager at first says the
driver is by "Microsoft" but when you go into driver details and find the
actual file "smplscsi.sys" it shows as being OnSpec and the version is 2.73

I have tried the Scanport website and OnSpec and also searching many
different forums with no luck in finding an updated driver. Scanport has a
software bundle that it says is for XP, but it still includes this same old
version of smplscsi.sys as part of the bundle.

Disabling the driver in device manager allowed my system to acheive standby,
but then my scanner is not found. When I tried to "enable" the driver again
it instantly hard boots the computer. I finally had to uninstall it and then
reboot and cycle power on the scanner to get XP to see "New Hardware found"
and reinstall the driver. It reinstalls the scanner driver and the host
controller driver by the way.

Microsofts response so far was just that... disable the driver and see if
the standby problem goes away. Why they needed to test whether the driver is
indeed the problem or not when the original error message clearly said it was
I don't know. I'm waiting for their next response.
