Hello
I really need to sort this problem out.
Here is a collection of everything I know about it and have tried.
I have been a long time user of Norton AV (since about 1997)
I have been running NIS 2005 on my current system for some months but have been annoyed at the slow down it has apparently been causing.
After about two months of running this system I noticed a very annoying problem.
When I click to open a file the system displays the egg timer for between 10 and 40 seconds.
Sometimes it fails to open at all!
This happens mostly on txt files but also on picture files and when trying to view file properties or cut and paste or delete.
The problem is also random sometimes not happening.
With a 3.2ghz cpu and 1gb ram I would not have expected this.
I have tried many things, all the normal good house keeping etc.
After a while having been advised on discussion forums I found that if I disabled Norton Internet Securities Anti Virus scanner the problem would go.
I therefore found another AV that everyone said was much lighter on the system and did not cause a slow down.
I therefore removed NIS. This new AV was NOD32 and I paired this with Zone Alarm (free version)
Initially I was very pleased with the fact that it identified three threats that Norton had passed over!
The scanner was also much faster.
However the same issue still occurs!
It would seem that the system just can't cope with a AV running?
I made sure to completely remove NIS even using their custom un installer from the Symantec web site.
