Lost system sounds all of a sudden. Went into Control Panel--Sounds, Speech,
Audio Devices--Change The Sound Scheme. The Sound Scheme was set on Windows
Default. I highlighted the 1st one (Asterisk), in the box, "Windows XP Error"
showed up, but the little button with the arrow on it to listen to it
(preview it) is "greyed out". Tried to change it to another Sound
Scheme...same thing...still greyed out...I can play every other type of audio
on pc except midi..something happened to my midi playback device, I highlight
it, click "apply", but it won't stay there. But I can hear everything on
websites. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I've tried everything...and
I am still puzzeled....HELP!!!

The system sounds require a functioning *default* audio device.

I get the impression, that your default audio device has changed, from the
"greyed out" I'd say: set to none. While, on the other hand, you still can
use the hardware with other software.
You may get some clue elsewhere in Control Panel, like in System | Hardware
| Device_Manager.

As always with sudden changes, try to remember what has happened since the
last time that the problem did not occur.
It's not a problem that can easily be solved remotely.

The audio device that shows up in the play back drop down menu is "Microsoft
GS Wavetable SW synth", but as I stated when I highlight it, Click apply,
then ok.....then go back to that tab, the box is empty again. I have gone
into System | Hardware | Device_Manager .... there is nothing with an
explanation mark next to it. I have checked the properties on all the sound
devices & drivers, they all say that they are functioning properly..... Still
stumped here....any help would be greatly appreciated....Thank you....

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one with this EXACT same problem. Did you
ever find a solution?

Still haven't found a solution and it's driving me crazy....
I'm sorry I can't help you NavyRet....
When I got a mail notification just now, I thought someone had
and answer for me...good luck in finding a solution and if you
find one let me know...thanks...

I am having the same issue. I can play cds, and sounds without any issue
except the normal Windows sounds scheme doesn't work. When I go into the
control panel sounds section the play button is grayed out.

Did you ever find a solution?

This happened to me back in Sept. 2006 and I am still baffled with the
situation.
I am constantly trying different things to correct it, but here it is almost
7 months later and I still haven't found a solution. I have also noticed that
when I go to a website that has a shockwave presentation, I can see it, but I
have no sound. But it's strange because when I play online games (which is
shockwave) I have sound...figure that one out....Other than that I can hear
everything online and I can play CDs, DVDs & sounds just fine.
I wish I did have an answer....
