system slowness

Ever since I installed Vista, my system speed has sucked. I have a 1024MD
ram, 200 GB hard drive and an intel 2 duo processor E6300, so it shouldn't be
the box itself. Most of the time I can hear the hard drive clicking along
like there are tons of programs running in the background, yet when I run
task manager to see WTF they are, nothing looks out of kilter, and my CPU
usage is generally fairly low.
I have auto updates on, but the updates fail, giving me error codes like 642
and 653, yet when I hit the help key, the help topics that come up are
totally different error codes than the ones to start with. I'm fed up! I have
MS one care virus stuff, so I would hope that would prevent a virus, but who
knows. Can anyone offer advice?

It *may* be the box itself. How much RAM you need for decent
performance depends on what apps you run, but for many people 2GB of
RAM, not 1GB, is required.

That could be paging, caused by not enough RAM.

The other common problem these days is malware infestation, especially
non-viral malware. One Care is not the best product on the market, and
besides, a single anti-spyware product, even the best one, isn't
sufficient. It can't hurt to do a thorough check for spyware and other
malware. I recommend that you begin troubleshooting by
going to MVP Malke's malware removal site at
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware and
following the instructions there.

Thanks.
I ran the CCleaner and as far as I can tell, no difference. The failed
update continues to fail. It is listed here: <Security Update for Microsoft
..NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack 1 (KB929729)

Download size: 8.6 MB

You may need to restart your computer for this update to take effect.

Update type: Important

A security issue has been identified that could allow an attacker to
compromise your Windows-based system running the Microsoft .NET Framework and
gain complete control over it. You can help protect your computer by
installing this update from Microsoft. After you install this item, you may
have to restart your computer.

the error code it gives me (this time) is 643.
I notice that my CPU is running from 6-15% usually, but my ram memory runs
at 70-84%. Do I just need to buy more ram memory? Current programs running
are nothing intensive, just IE, AIM, Itunes, etc.

OK one problem at a time. 1st for vista to run smooth you need 2gb of
ram.
2nd. Run CCleaner, reboot, run again, reboot and defrag your boot
sector. then let it sit for 24hrs do not turn off. you can use it, but
don't turn off. Vista takes a long time to index for the first time,
like on a new system I always recommend 48 hrs. And after that if you
still have your update errors post back.

I had the same problems with Vista - 4GB of RAM and an Athlon-64 X2 6400 CPU. It was
so s.....l.....o.......w. I received the same suggestions from my system supplier
and followed them. Ccleaner was nice, but it didn't help the real problem, which was
caused by a piece of malware......called Vista. I'm running the same system now with
Windows XP Pro loaded and it's so fast... well, it is BLAZING FAST! So what if I
can't run HALO-3 or Aero glass. XP actually works!!!

when I boot up the install disc, it brings up the install page with no option
to select language or keyboard, and no scroll down possibility.

Something is fishy in Denmark -- or with the Vista setup you had running.

I dual-boot WinXP and Vista Ultimate on the new computer. I can't say
that Vista runs noticeably slower (except for some file/folder
operations under File Explorer). I am running Aero as well. I do have
a spiffy video card, and no anti-virus programs in the background.

I_cannot_say that all was well with your Vista setup. Ah, the mysteries
of computing.

no, I bought a new computer last November, it came with XP, but had to send
off for the Vista program when it came available, so it's the regular install
disk. I notice that Vista opens it differently than XP, maybe leaves the
initial page off? leaving me only the option to install, or cancel. There was
also an "upgrade assistant" disk.
I'm just wondering whether I should go back to XP. I didn't have any
problems with it, just wanted some of the cool features advertised with
Vista, however if they don't work right, maybe it's not worth it?
