System slowdown after downloads from Microsoft

I was trying to help my wife connect to her university
system and she was told she would need something called
activeX, so I went into Microsoft Downloads and
downloaded several programs that had ActiveX in their
names. It didn't help my wifes problem and it slowed my
2.4 gig processor to a crawl. It takes 5 to 10 minutes
to load my wordprocessor and other programs whereas it
used to take maybe 10 seconds. And where I normally
could click on an empty field that would then instantly
drop a list of family email ID's from which to choose, it
now takes 10 or more seconds. I uninstalled my
wordprocessor and other programs then reinstalled them.
The computer acted the same after rebooting. Then I
tried to identify the files I had downloaded by the date
I did the downloading, but I didn't have much luck
because of all the other reinstalling I had done.

Is there anything anyone can recommend short of
reinstalling the operating system? Any help would be
greatly appreciated.

Use XP's system restore facility. This is the kind of thing
it was designed for. Restore to a date prior to the activex
updates.
Start/all programs/accessories/system tools/system restore.
