Hi everyone,

I hope that someone in this newsgroup can help me with his query. I have
posted it here as another MSN user has just come on telling me that he has
had the same problem as me today with this. Is this an MSN issue?

I have suddenly begun getting a dialogue box entitled 'System Shutdown' come
up with the following message after logging on to the Intenet or rather it
only seems to happen when I log on to the Internet. The message reads:
-----------------
The system is shutting down. Please save work.........
initiated by NT Authority\System

Message
Windows must now be restarted because the Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
service terminated unexpectedly.
-----------------
If it helps the diagnostic, I am running Windows XP Pro with SP1 installed
with Norton Anti Virus software.

On the first two occasions I also had the 'Generic Host Process for WIN32
Services' error message. Not sure if it is connected however as it only
occured on the first two occasions.

Thank you for any help.

Regards,
Antony

Greetings Antony,

It sounds like you're being hit with an RPC exploit. To correct, install this patch:
http://microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-026.asp

If this happens again (say while you're downloading the patch), click Start, then Run, then
type "cmd" and click OK. Then on the command line, type:
shutdown -a

This will abort the shutdown and allow you to install the patch.
