System Restore

I recently purchased a used laptop and ran into operating
issues I cannot resolve, and do not have the original disc
(s). The system restore oprion does offer a complete
restore to factory settings and when I try to restore to
an earlier time/restore point no changes are made.

If I purchase XP Home or Pro and load it into the laptop,
will it format the disc (wipe clean) and will I be able
to start anew, or will it just load in addition to the
old software?

Hi Phillip,

System Restore is designed that way. It monitors a certain filetypes only, not all.

For the reinstallation:
You can choose a repair install or a clean install. Clean installation wipes out the hard drive and installs XP from the scratch. A repair installation preserves the user data and restores the missing/corrupt core system files.
